Iraq first submitted its request to join the bank in 2018, and its shareholder status enables it to apply to become a recipient economy, which would unlock EBRD finance and policy support. "When the time comes, we are looking forward to starting work in Iraq, applying our expertise to developing its economy," EBRD President Odile Renaud-Basso said in a statement. Renaud-Basso told Reuters that Senegal and Ghana had submitted applications to join the bank in the latest sign of its push into sub-Saharan Africa.

Austrian lender Erste said on Friday it was repurchasing a 15% stake in its Hungarian subsidiary, currently held by Hungarian state-owned Corvinus International Investments. Francis Malige, EBRD managing director of financial institutions, said the investment had been designed to help the Hungarian bank recapitalise while supporting a positive relationship with the authorities. "We received a call notice from Erste last Friday and are proceeding with the sale of our stake to the group, based on terms agreed during our 2016 investment."

CNN —The party of Myanmar’s deposed former leader Aung San Suu Kyi said Thursday they were concerned she is “not receiving adequate medical care” while in prison, amid reports her health is failing. “If [Aung San Suu Kyi’s] health is not only impaired but her life also is endangered, the military junta is solely responsible,” the party said. Suu Kyi's son, Kim Aris, said he was "extremely worried" about his mother's health. Suu Kyi is facing 27 years of detention related to 14 criminal offences. In August the military pardoned Suu Kyi on five of the 19 offences for which she was convicted but said she would remain under house arrest. State media reported she had been moved from jail to house arrest shortly before.

Prices dropped by 0.8% in August alone, the largest monthly fall since March, after a 0.3% decline in July, Nationwide's figures showed. The Bank of England has raised interest rates 14 times since December 2021 to 5.25%, and financial markets expect another rate increase this month to 5.5%. However Andrew Wishart, senior property economist at Capital Economics, said he expected house prices had another 5% to fall, taking the total peak-to-trough decline to 10.5%. "We think the August data marks the start of a significant further drop in house prices," he said, pointing to weakness in the latest Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors survey, which shows the most widespread price falls since 2009. The poll showed respondents expected house prices to be unchanged in 2024 and to rise just over 3% in 2025.

The first three England games saw one-fifth of bets placed by women, it said. Betting on the co-host and semi-finalist Australia saw a 200% increase, fuelled by the Matildas strong run. Soccer leads the way in terms of the number of people betting and placing bets, and the number of women betting on women's soccer has doubled annually, the study said. Entain did not immediately disclose the number of bets placed on the World Cup.
